Abstract
This article examines the transformative impact of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) on humanities education in higher education. Motivated by the rapid adoption of large language models (LLMs) such as GPT, Gemini, Llama, and Claude, this article explores the opportunities, challenges, and ethical implications of integrating GenAI into teaching, learning, and academic research in the humanities. Using a narrative review approach, it synthesizes relevant literature on GenAI applications, opportunities, challenges, and ethical concerns across humanities education and research. It highlights how GenAI enhances personalized learning, automates research tasks, and supports multilingual education, while addressing challenges such as AI literacy, infrastructural readiness, and equitable access. Ethical concerns, including plagiarism, data protection, algorithmic bias, and over-reliance on AI, are critically analyzed alongside the need for robust governance policies, particularly in resource-constrained settings.
Keywords: generative artificial intelligence, higher education, humanities, AI literacy, academic integrity, ethical governance
