Teaching Idioms through Songs in ELT: A Multimodal Case Study

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of incorporating music into English language teaching (ELT) to address the diverse learning styles and motivations of preparatory cycle students. Using the song “Roar” by Katy Perry as a case study, the research focuses on teaching idioms through a pilot study involving 22 students. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative analysis with focus group discussion. Students were administered a pre-test and post-test to measure their comprehension and retention of idioms. The results showed a significant improvement in scores, indicating that the use of songs is an effective strategy for teaching idioms. Furthermore, focus group discussions revealed increased motivation and participation. This study demonstrates how integrating songs can address students’ diverse learning styles and preferences, enhancing the inclusivity of English language teaching.
